Pulitzer’s legacy includes the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor . He persuaded his readers to send small amounts of cash to have the statue erected. Otherwise it would have been left lying in a warehouse. He established the Pulitzer prize to be awarded to outstanding writers and news reporters. He left millions to launch the first journalism school at Columbia , N.Y. He is also remembered for supporting the poor against the powerful. He made his newspapers entertaining as well as informative He expanded coverage to include foreign affairs of which he was an expert..
2. Do you agree with Pulitzer’s sensationalist beliefs?
He was criticized for “yellow journalistm” but only published sensational news stories to rival Hearst during the Spanish-American War. He regretted it and afterwards demanded accurate reporting with reliable sources.
3. Do you believe the tendencies of the Pulitzer prize to be awarded to liberal causes to be unjust?
The Pulitzer prize is not only awarded to liberals but to writers of every political view.
4. How did Pulitzer's upbringing and emigration from Hungary, influence his later journalism?
I can only speculate that his upbringing in Hungary made him appreciate the greater freedom for editors and reporters he experienced in the United States .
