The Pulitzer Prizes
"The Pulitzer Prize is an idea; it's a vote of confidence. Like literature, it exists purely in the mind."
-Jeffrey Euginides
The Pulitzer Prize, considered by many to be one of the most prestigious awards endowed in the field of literature, was a direct result of Joseph Pulitzer's rigorous yet commendable lifestyle. Established in 1917 by Pulitzer's will, six years after his death, Pulitzer prizes are bequeathed to individuals who have written outstanding works in a variety of fields, not specifically limited to journalism. Prizes are presented by Columbia University in the categories of drama, letters, poetry, nonfiction literature, and biographies, as well as in other diverse fields such as musical composition. His total donation of five hundred thousand dollars, to be split over the many recipients of the prize provides an incentive for aspiring journalists and other followers of the literary arts.
