I am deeply interested in the progress and elevation of journalism, having spent my life in that profession, regarding it as a noble profession and one of unequaled importance for its influence upon the minds and morals of the people.

Pulitzer's ideals in how to report the news was being excessively used by Hearst's paper. Heightening levels of sensationalism led to the war of yellow journalism, news based on crude exaggeration. Hearst had bought staff from the New York World, Joseph Pulitzer's paper. An enormous controversy arose and transformed America's opinion on nearly every topic argued.
